13. Project background: Why is the project taking place? Why is the need form the project?By 2050 urban areas will host 70% of the world population. How to provide healthy food for everyone in a sustainable way is a challenge affecting especially cities. As the UN Special Rapporteur for the right to food explained, these problems should be addressed by rebuilding local food systems and creating links between cities and rural hinterlands. This kind of intervention needs to be addressed now at policy level and with concrete actions.

22. Please give a short description of the major result or success of the project so far. (If you project is less than 1 year old feel free to ignore this question)A major achievement of the project is the adoption by 119 Mayors of the world of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact. This represents the Food Guidelines of the project and is the product of a participatory approach in between 46 cities and a team of experts. The process started with project’s cities and enlarged to other committed urban centers. The Food Guidelines are composed of a preamble, a commitment section and the Framework for Action, a collection of 37 input to achieve more sustainable urban food systems. The Pact brought the attention of world local leaders, International organization, CSOs, NGOs on the importance of the role that Urban Areas and Local Authorities will play for the sustainability of our environment
